“Women Wearing Shoulder Pads” makes history as the first Spanish-language stop-motion series by Adult Swim.
The creator, Gonzalo Cordova, was born in Ecuador and immigrated to Florida as a child. The series is produced by Cinema Fantasma, a Mexican-based stop-motion company.
The queer melodrama series takes place in 1980s Ecuador and follows a telenovela-style of storytelling, featuring surreal visuals. The episodes feature an all-woman cast, musical numbers and bullfighting with life-sized guinea pigs in lieu of bulls.
Produced entirely in Spanish with English subtitles, the series has some fans of Adult Swim conflicted by the decision not to dub the episodes, while others appreciate the authenticity as the drama revolves around Latin American culture.
“A series I’ve been told is weird even by Adult Swim standards,” Cordova said.
The episodes are jam-packed with business rivalry, mother and daughter drama and original music inspired by 1980s Spanish pop.
“Woman Wearing Shoulder Pads” premiered on August 17, 2025. New episodes are released each Sunday on Adult Swim and are available to stream at midnight on HBO Max. The episodes are also available on the Adult Swim YouTube channel.
