UHD’s student-run literary magazine, The Bayou Review, officially launched its Spring 2025 issue on April 22, which featured a short story written by Dateline Editor Karla Carrillo.
The story is titled “The Art That Cries” and can be found on page 69 of the issue. It is a magical realist work which emphasizes immortality in art as well as appreciation for loved ones.
Among the other artists and writers featured in the Spring 2025 issue, another Dateliner’s work can be found just ten pages away.
On page 79, the short story “The Cursed Wings of Icarus” by reporter Vincente Luzardo is a modern dark reimagining of the Greek myth of Icarus.
Carrillo emphasizes the importance of staying authentic to oneself in their writing, and taking as many opportunities as possible to have their work noticed, for receiving criticism is essential to artistic development.
“Taking on journalism helped me view my work through a critical perspective and made me a better literary writer,” Carrillo says.
Though there’s a plethora of creative opportunities available to students at UHD, submitting to the Bayou Review is a wonderful start.
Though this issue’s launch has already passed, news regarding submission deadlines and launch information for future issues can be found on flyers throughout campus or in announcements sent to students’ Gatormail.
The latest issue can be accessed on their website.
