As UHD opened its doors for the fall semester, the newly established Creative Writing Club welcomed its growing number of members. The first official meeting took place on Aug. 22 and was led by club president, Tom Tice. A supplemental virtual meeting occurred the following Tuesday hosted by club vice president and Dateline reporter, Vincente Luzardo.
The Creative Writing Club invites writers of all kinds to engage with each other’s work, foster their craft, and build community among likeminded people.
It began when Tice pointed out a lack of space on campus for writers who are still navigating the uncertainty that comes with being a creative writer in a world where artistic expression is undervalued.
“My hope is that together we can serve as a lighthouse for one another, guiding past the dangerous shoals of doubt that might otherwise cause writers to scuttle their work,” Tice said.
The club has amassed 28 members according to UHD’s CampusGroups portal, even though it is still in its infancy. Among those members is Clyde Barnes, who has taken a leap of faith in sharing his work with others to gain creative input and advance his skill.
“The club presents the opportunity for voices to go beyond the meditations of a journal, document, note, or piece of paper,” Barnes said.
The Creative Writing Club encourages students to get involved by connecting with them on Campus Groups to keep abreast of upcoming meetings and club events, as well as join the GroupMe to engage directly with members and officers alike.
