Latinitas visited UHD on Oct. 3 as part of their ongoing collaboration to provide UHD students with internship opportunities and support their shared goals of empowering communities.
“My introduction to Latinitas was through former UHD student Camila DeJesus internship in the organization,” said Albert DeJesus, Interim Director of the Center for Latino studies. “That internship turned into a job opportunity as Magazine and Media Editor for Latinitas, and through our conversations it became evident that CLS shares many common goals with the institution.”
Latinitas is an Austin-based, non-profit organization that is focused on empowering students to innovate through media and technology.
Latinitas is dedicated to serving and empowering underrepresented communities and building future leaders in STEAM who advocate for themselves and their communities.
The Latinitas Media Department began their visit touring the campus and then met with Latinas Achieve officers, SGA leadership, Latinitas UHD Interns, and faculty to share a presentation about their organization.
Salwa Yordi, the Latinitas Communications Director, Frankie Alaniz, Digital Content Coordinator, and Camila DeJesus, Magazine and Media Editor, held a Q&A session after their presentation about their organization.
“It’s really important to find a cause that you identify yourself with,” said Yordi during the Q&A session. “I always say our voices matter.”
This meeting was organized by the Center for Latino Studies leadership, Assistant Director Dr. Anthony Ramirez and the Center’s Interim Director, Dr. Albert DeJesus.
For the partnership, the CLS has sponsored four paid internships with Latinitas. Two Magazine Writer Interns were hired, Indira Zaldivar and Stefhanie Lazo, who both will write articles in Spanish for Latinitas Magazine.
UHD students that are interested in applying for the internships with Latinitas can visit the Center for Latino Studies website for more information about the internships and how to apply for them.
