Everyone should mark their calendars because Black History Month festivities are returning to the Houston Public Library all throughout February. The festivities are scheduled at HPLs the City of Houston. Those interested should check the dates and times on libraries’ specific websites.
An example of event presentations includes one on Feb. 8, when HPL will host “Words of Defiance: How Black Newspapers Amplified Labor Justice and Social Change.” Prominent speaker Marquel Sennet will discuss Black Media and how it shaped the African American labor movement during times of social tension.
This event will be held at the African American History Research Center at the Gregory Campus at 500 McKinney St. Sennet was named the Director of Communications and Marketing at the Caddo Parish School District. She is an award-winning journalist and former news anchor in Shreveport, La. This promises to be an informative event that no one should miss.
In addition to the previous great event, people can “Get to Know an Architect.” John Chase is the Architect, and he will conduct an online event on Thursday, Feb. 13, from noon to 1 p.m. Chase is the first licensed African American architect in the State of Texas. He was the first African American to attend the School of Architecture at the University of Texas at Austin.
Another event on the roster will be “Cultural Connections,” which will celebrate the community’s rich diversity with food and feature cultural performances for all ages. It will happen on Saturday, Feb. 15, at the Johnson Neighborhood Library located at 3517 Reed Road.

The Deluxe Show has an event premiering on Feb. 7, at 7:30 pm. A documentary screening celebrating prominent Fifth Ward artists Bert Long and Jesse Lott in coordination with the Houston Museum of African American Culture and Project Row Houses. The African American Archives Tour, also at the African American Research Center, will be held on Saturday, Feb. 22, from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Students are encouraged to join a close-out of Black History Month by touring the research center. They can see images of the first Black public school in Houston located in the historical Fourth Ward. They may also learn about the founding of Freedmen’s Town and much more.
