Our Code of Ethics
The Dateline strives to continue to be a trustworthy and truthful source for our readers. Reporting information that can be viewed as inaccurate or harmful is against policy. We promise to uphold future journalists and writers to the highest code of ethics.
Accuracy
- Always gather accurate information and continue to update throughout the life of the story.
- Never misquote or misrepresent a source. Be sure to verify information before reporting.
- Provide as much source information as possible so that others can form the most informed opinion.
Harm
- Always treat sources with respect and dignity.
- Never forget to be considerate of others when reporting information that is related to children, victims of abuse or sex crimes, or those who may not be able to give proper consent.
- Recognize that reporting certain information can cause discomfort or harm to others.
Integrity
- Always avoid situations for creditability to be questioned.
- Be honest when gathering, interpreting, and reporting information.
- Ensure that all work is original. No plagiarism or use of Artificial Intelligence.
- Acknowledge and correct mistakes immediately.
- Never accept gifts or free services that could damage or compromise integrity or credibility.
- Always avoid conflicts of interest. Whether they are real or can be perceived as conflicts of interest.
- Always report any unethical practices or conflicts of interest.
- Any content that may be sponsored or used for advertising purposes must be labeled as such.

The AP Stylebook is available as a print hard copy (updated biennially) and a searchable online format (updated regularly).

As a student-operated organization at the University of Houston Downtown, The Dateline is a proud member of Texas Intercollegiate Press Association (TIPA). This organization is known for its outstanding support to Texas college students in media and journalism. The organization hosts conferences and contests recognizing student excellence. Most importantly, TIPA has been a key partner in our staff’s professional development, raising the standards of student journalists, editors, and advisers alike.
