The University of Houston-Downtown is rolling out a new artificial intelligence security system for Microsoft Outlook accounts as students report a surge in scam and misleading emails hitting their inboxes.
On March 19, all UHD students received an email from the institution’s Information Technology department titled “Campus Announcement: Introduction of Abnormal AI Email Security.” In the email, it is stated that beginning March 24, UHD will activate Abnormal AI, a behavioral-based email protection platform designed to detect phishing attempts, social-engineering schemes and account-takeover threats.
The system works by analyzing communication patterns and flags unusual sender behavior, offering a level of defense that campus officials say traditional filters often miss.
UHD is the first to transition into using Abnormal AI in the UH system. Other campuses are expected to follow by mid-April. Once the transition is complete, the system will replace Proofpoint, the long-used email filtering service.
During the process of implementation, students are being asked to monitor both their Proofpoint daily digests and their Outlook Junk folder, where Abnormal AI may temporarily route suspicious messages. After mid-April, Proofpoint digests and the quarantine portal will be discontinued, leaving Outlook’s Junk folder as the primary location for misclassified mail.
The upgrade comes as UHD students report an increase in fraudulent emails impersonating professors, employers and campus offices. University officials say the new system aims to curb those threats and strengthen the protection of student information and data.
