Many people assume that donating unwanted clothing solves the problem of textile waste. However, research shows the issue extends beyond donations. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) reports that Americans discard millions of tons of textiles annually. Most of these discarded textiles end up in landfills or are incinerated. While people commonly donate clothing, thrift stores only resell a portion of what they receive.
Organizations such as Goodwill Industries report that not all donated items can be sold due to low quality, damage, or oversupply. When organizations cannot sell clothing locally, they often sell it in bulk to textile recyclers or export it to international markets. These exports create secondary markets for affordable clothing; however, they also contribute to growing volumes of global textile waste.
Some textiles are down cycled into insulation, cleaning rags, or industrial materials. Identifying textile recycling as a challenge stems from the prevalence of blended synthetic fibers in fast fashion garments, which complicates separation and processing.
As consumers continue purchasing inexpensive clothing at high rates, environmental experts warn textile waste will continue to increase. Understanding where unwanted clothing ends up provides greater awareness of the environmental impact of fast fashion and highlights ongoing concerns regarding sustainability and responsibility within the fashion industry.
