Changes in Texas education policy and school closures in districts like Houston Independent School District and Fort Bend Independent School District are raising concerns for college students planning to become teachers.

Across the Houston area, several school districts have made major changes. Fort Bend ISD voted to close seven elementary schools;, Houston ISD plans to close 12 schools, and Spring Branch ISD has already closed two campuses. These decisions are largely tied to declining enrollment and budget challenges, but they are also impacting how future educators view the profession.

Governor Greg Abbott, a Republican, has faced criticism from  students and educators over issues like teacher pay and the ongoing teacher shortage in Texas. At the same time, schools are introducing new technology, including artificial intelligence in classrooms, which is changing how teaching jobs may look in the future.

For students studying education, these changes create uncertainty about job opportunities and long-term stability. Genesis Chinchilla, a freshman at the University of Houston–Downtown, shared her concerns:

“As an aspiring teacher, this makes me concerned about whether by the time I become a teacher I will be able to provide each student with the education they deserve, and whether I will have to worry about my job being at risk.”

Some students believe education policies should focus more on supporting teachers and improving classrooms rather than cutting schools or limiting resources. For future educators, these decisions are not just political  they directly impact their careers. Many say they plan to stay informed and speak out to protect opportunities for the next generation of teachers in Texas.
