For many students, getting downtown every day can feel like a challenge. Parking can be expensive; traffic is unpredictable and not everyone has access to a car. Houston’s METRO system, however, offers practical and affordable alternatives for those willing and able to learn how it works.
Start with a METRO Q Card
Students can pick up a METRO Q Card at the Parking and Transportation Office in Room N117. The card works on local buses, Park & Ride routes and all METRORail lines. Once the card is registered with student status, riders receive a 50% discount on fares. The card can be reloaded in the UHD Bookstore or other METRO reloading stations as needed, making it easy to budget for commuting.
Using Park & Ride Lots
Park & Ride lots allow students to park for free and take a commuter bus toward downtown. There is also the “Kiss & Ride” option, which provides space for riders to be dropped off at the bus, bypassing the parking garage altogether. These stations are located throughout the Houston area, allowing students to choose the location that is most convenient to where they live. These Park & Ride locations include:

- Gessner, 9925 Westpark Drive
- Westchase, 11050 Harwin Drive
- Grand Parkway, 1030 North Grand Pkwy
- Kingsland, 21669 Kingsland Blvd
- Maxey Road, 515 Maxey Road
- East End Harrisburg Garage (connects to the Green Line)
Depending on distance and traffic, some Park & Ride trips—including travel time to the lot, the bus ride and walking to campus—may take an hour to an hour and a half. Students are encouraged to plan ahead and arrive on campus early, especially before morning classes.
Timing and transfers
Park & Ride buses run more frequently during the morning and evening commutes. Midday service may drop to one bus per hour for each route. It is also helpful to map out walking routes beforehand, as some buses may not drop passengers directly in front of campus.
If a ride ends near the METRORail, the Red Line runs directly next to the One Main Building, making transfers convenient and easy.
Checking bus arrival times
Each METRO bus stop sign has a posted stop number to identify the location beyond just the street name. Students can text 696-433 with the bus stop number in order to receive real-time arrival updates for their buses and others routes. This service works without needing to download an app.
Safety considerations
As with any large city, awareness is key. Students are encouraged to keep personal items secure, stay alert by avoiding loud headphones and travel in pairs when possible. Carrying small personal safety items, such as pepper spray or an alarm keychain, may also provide peace of mind. Above all, trust instincts and move to a different location if something feels unsafe.
Houston is large, busy and full of things to see. With a Q Card, a plan and some awareness, public transit can be an affordable and reliable way for students to get to class—and explore the city along the way.
