Freshly open at the start of the Spring 2026 semester, the University of Houston-Downtown has officially introduced Gator Grill as its newest burger concept, replacing the previous burger station at the UHD food court.
The change marks a new transition from a limited burger menu to an expanded lineup, offering more variety in spreads, cheese selections, toppings, burgers and sandwiches. The refreshed grill options aim to give students a wider range of customization.
With the debut of Gator Grill, UHD students now have access to many meal options that go beyond classic hamburgers such as sandwiches like the crispy chicken sandwich, the grilled chicken sandwich and the crispy cod sandwich.
Aside from the typical hamburger and sandwich options, the Gator Grill is offering plant-based and alternative protein choices that UHD had not previously provided. These new burger variations are the black bean, turkey, impossible and portobello burger.
Customization upgrades give students the ability to choose spreads like honey mustard, roasted garlic aioli, avocado ranch and sweet onion teriyaki, along with cheese options such as provolone and pepper jack.
However, every change is not completely new. Familiar sides still remain available like French fries and onion rings, keeping the menu balanced between new items and returning favorites. This is in hopes to appeal to both adventurous and traditional students.
The Gator Grill’s launch is part of a larger campus dining update rolling out in 2026, reflecting UHD’s goal of increasing variety and convenience within the food court.
As the Spring semester progresses, the upgraded grill station is expected to become a central part of students’ dining routines, enhancing on-campus food options and improving the overall student experience.
