Welcome to The Dateline’s first fully digital issue. I am the first digital editor in the history of The Dateline, UHD’s student-run newspaper.
The Dateline has been issuing print newspapers to the UHD community since 1982, where students, faculty, and staff read current events taking place on or off campus. The student newspaper converted into an online platform as of 2024 due to conflicts with website management and their printing press.
It was comforting to see my artwork and written pieces on the pages as a staff writer and illustrator, which were soon transported into online articles on the previous website of The Dateline. I have dedicated my time to The Dateline by writing and editing articles and submitting artwork since the fall semester of 2022. This experience led me to grow into a section editor role and then an assistant editor role.
My goal as the first digital editor of The Dateline’s history is to create a unique platform that operates similarly to how we would with our printed issues and simultaneously incorporate new and interactive components to our online newspaper easily accessible for all of UHD.
We continue to uphold the same standards for practicing journalism, which include providing factual information to our community without biased language or conflict of interest. We establish the same editing process that ensures each piece is reviewed and ready to be published in the public domain.
What you might see on our website is brand new to the newspaper. You will see a combination of articles written by our staff and volunteer contributors, feature interviews in video format, and stand-alone illustrations.
We have replaced our issues schedule with a publication schedule that will ensure that the website is updated with a round of new stories every two weeks. Our social media pages will be highly integrated with our website, and you will see a lot of our social media posts as well.
We have expanded our interests to reach out to a wider audience. Categories such as “Lifestyle & Wellness” and “Sports & Gaming” have become individual sections that expand beyond our campus events. We believe that every topic, such as mental health, local news, art, music reviews and campus concerns, matters, and we do not limit our content only to these topics. We can always expand.
Explore the page while you are here, view the variety of topics we touch, and let us know what you think. Your voice matters as always.
